THE HONEST ANSWER FIRST

Can I get free solar panels in Leeds?

For most Leeds homeowners, no — there is no general "free solar" scheme from Leeds City Council or the government. Genuinely funded solar exists only through means-tested routes such as ECO4 and Warm Homes: Local Grant, aimed at low-income households in low-EPC (band D–G) homes, and it is almost always bundled with insulation or heating rather than fitted on its own. If your household does not qualify, you pay for the system — but you still benefit from 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 and get paid for what you export.

Be wary of adverts promising "free solar panels" to everyone. The old rent-a-roof deals hand a company the rights to your roof for 20–25 years, can complicate selling your home, and the savings go to them, not you. Owning the system keeps the savings yours.

So the practical question for most Leeds households is not "how do I get it for free" but "what funding and grants genuinely apply, and how do I pay for the rest sensibly". This page sets out both — honestly, with the current dated facts, and with links to the official guidance so you can check everything yourself.

THE FULL PICTURE

Solar panel grants and funding available to Leeds homeowners

Here is every route that genuinely applies in Leeds and West Yorkshire, in plain terms — what it is, who it is for, and what it is worth. The first two apply to everyone; the middle three are means-tested; the last is simply how to pay if you would rather spread the cost. We do not lend and we are not paid to steer you to any of them.

0% VAT on domestic solar & battery

Who it is for All residential solar PV and battery storage installed in England, Scotland and Wales. Applies to the whole install.

What it is worth 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then it reverts to 5% (VAT Notice 708/6). Not permanent — an install completing after that date costs 5% more.

The strongest genuine 'why now' for a Leeds homeowner: a legislated date you can verify, not a sales countdown. As at July 2026.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

Who it is for Any MCS-certified home solar install with a smart meter. You choose the SEG supplier — it doesn't have to be your import supplier.

What it is worth Around 12p per kWh exported on the best tariffs (Octopus Outgoing), as at March 2026 — cut from a higher rate on 1 March 2026. Flux and Intelligent Flux are closed to new customers.

Export income is a bonus, not the sales case. Using your own power (avoiding ~26p import) is worth about twice as much as exporting — anchor your savings on self-consumption, not the export rate.

ECO4

Who it is for GB-wide energy-supplier obligation for low-income and qualifying-benefit households in low-EPC (D–G) homes.

What it is worth Fully or part-funded measures. Solar only alongside heating/insulation where it cuts heating cost — not standalone.

Runs to 31 December 2026 — a 9-month extension from 31 March 2026, confirmed on 23 January 2026, with the government stating there will be no further extension. As at July 2026.

Warm Homes: Local Grant

Who it is for England, 2025–2028. Owner-occupiers and private renters in EPC D–G homes, household income of £36,000 or less.

What it is worth Grant-funded insulation and low-carbon heating package; solar included where it reduces heating cost.

The main successor route to ECO4/HUG for lower-income Leeds households. Delivered locally through partnerships such as Better Homes Yorkshire.

Better Homes Yorkshire / Home Energy West Yorkshire (WYCA)

Who it is for Leeds City Council retrofit delivery partnership and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority advice/referral service.

What it is worth A route to a free eligibility assessment and to the grant schemes above — not a standalone perpetual grant.

Where you check what a Leeds household actually qualifies for. Its funding tracks the national schemes.

0% / low-rate home-improvement finance

Who it is for Homeowners who prefer to spread the cost rather than pay upfront.

What it is worth Some lenders offer 0% or low-rate 'additional borrowing' for energy-efficiency measures; FCA-regulated home-improvement finance is also available (representative APR and total repayable shown by the lender).

We don't lend — we set out the honest ways to pay. There is no general 'free solar from Leeds City Council' for ordinary homeowners.

Better Homes Yorkshire and Home Energy West Yorkshire (run with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority) are the local front door for a free eligibility check on the means-tested schemes — their funding tracks the national programmes above rather than being a separate perpetual pot.

THE SUPPORT THAT NEVER RUNS OUT

0% VAT and the Smart Export Guarantee — what they are really worth

These are the two forms of help every Leeds homeowner gets, and they are the reason solar stacks up even without a grant. 0% VAT applies to the whole install — panels, inverter and a battery fitted at the same time — under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, until it reverts to 5% on 1 April 2027. On a £7,000 install that is a genuine saving worth having.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for surplus power you send to the grid. The best flat tariffs pay around 12p per kWh (Octopus Outgoing, cut from a higher rate on 1 March 2026; the Flux tariffs are now closed to new customers). You choose your SEG supplier separately from your import supplier, and you need an MCS-certified install plus a smart meter to claim it.

The bigger lever, though, is self-consumption. A unit you generate and use yourself avoids buying at roughly 26p, while an exported unit earns about 12p — so using your own power is worth roughly twice as much as selling it. Running the washing machine in daylight, or adding a home battery to shift generation into the evening, is where the real return sits. It is also why "lock in before the export rate drops" is not a real reason to rush.

Whether solar is worth it for your home is a fair question — see is solar worth it for the honest verdict, and solar panel costs in Leeds for the full price ranges. Export figures as at July 2026, from the Smart Export Guarantee rules.

A REAL DEADLINE, NOT A SALES COUNTDOWN

0% VAT on home solar ends on 31 March 2027

Home solar and battery installs are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, after which the rate returns to 5% (HMRC VAT Notice 708/6). An install completing after that date costs about 5% more — a legislated, verifiable date, not a manufactured "sales deadline". There is no rush beyond that: self-consumption savings do not expire, and we will never pressure you into a decision. If solar is not right for your roof, we will tell you.

FAQS

Solar panel grants in Leeds: your questions answered

The funding questions Leeds homeowners ask us most — with honest, current answers.

Can I get solar panels for free in Leeds or from Leeds City Council?

There's no general free-solar scheme from Leeds City Council for ordinary homeowners. Fully or part-funded solar is available through means-tested schemes — ECO4 (running to 31 December 2026) and Warm Homes: Local Grant — for low-income households in EPC D–G homes, usually alongside insulation or heating. Everyone else pays, but benefits from 0% VAT until March 2027. Better Homes Yorkshire can check what you qualify for.

How much can I save with solar panels in Leeds?

Savings depend on your bill, usage pattern and whether you add a battery, so we give ranges confirmed at survey — never 'bill to zero'. The savings come from two places: not importing units you now generate (worth around 26p each) and being paid around 12p for what you export. Using more of your own power — running appliances in daylight, or adding a battery — is the single biggest lever.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee and what will I be paid?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for surplus electricity you export to the grid. The best tariffs pay around 12p per kWh as at March 2026 (Octopus Outgoing), down from a higher rate — and you can choose your SEG supplier separately from your import supplier. You need an MCS-certified install and a smart meter. Export income is a useful bonus, but self-consumption is where the real value is.
